UExcel is a leading Credit-by-Examination (CBE) Program created by two global leaders in distance learning:
- Excelsior College, a regionally accredited institution of higher learning;
- Pearson, a leader in learning products and services.
Exams are offered in general college subjects and measure knowledge and understanding of material and skills that are typically taught in a one or two semester course. Students will study independently using preparation materials recommended for each exam. Unlike other Credit-by-Examination options, when students pass a UExcel exam, they will receive credit on an official transcript from a regionally accredited institution, Excelsior College.
The UExcel Advantage:
- Use the UExcel CBE program to quickly earn credits toward your college degree
- Use the Pearson partnership with Excelsior College, a non-profit institution, to help you earn college credits directly on a regionally accredited college’s official transcript
- Take your exams at one of 4200 conveniently located, secure Pearson VUE testing centers in more than 70 countries across the globe
- Transfer your academic credits, earned via the UExcel CBE program, with confidence. More than 2000 colleges and universities in the ACE college and university network agree to consider UExcel for transfer credit at their institutions.

Exams and Preparation
Exam preparation is an important part of the UExcel Credit-by-Examination Program.
For your independent study, UExcel has a variety of tools and resources available that can help you efficiently study for each exam. These resources are readily available, making it easy to study on your own time and at your own pace.Preparation and knowing what to expect before taking the exam is the key to success.
Textbooks
By using the recommended textbooks for each exam, you can ensure that you’ve thoroughly studied all the material that may be included in the exam.
Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials that are readily available via the Web, at no or low-cost, that you can use to learn about almost any topic. OER is presented in a variety of formats that support different learning styles.
Prominent U.S. educational institutions including MIT and Carnegie-Mellon University started the OER movement by putting their course materials online for anyone to access. Many other institutions, from small community colleges to prestigious research universities, now contribute content to OER sites.
Using OER in Your Studies
When preparing for UExcel® Exams or Excelsior College® Exams, OER can introduce you to new information, broaden your knowledge of particular subject matter, and enrich your understanding of exam and course topics.
OER can also help lower the overall cost of earning college credit by reducing reliance on more expensive sources of information.
We have prepared A Guide to Open Educational Resources (PDF) with OER courses – matched to our credit-by-examination program – that have been identified by the College as academically sound and applicable to the topics covered on the exams.
Finding OER Resources
If you want to explore OER beyond what we have identified as suitable for Excelsior College Exams and UExcel Exams, here are some options:
University Sponsored OER
Most university-based OER content can be found using these sites:
· OpenCourseWare Consortium
· OER Commons
Independently Sponsored OER
Examples of Web sites that specialize in OER Web courses designed by college professors under contract with the site sponsor include:
· saylor.org
· HippoCampus
· Open Course Library
Limited-scope OER Options
Brief lessons on very specific topics rather than full courses are available on sites like Khan Academy and iTunes U. While full courses are available on iTunes U, the sheer volume of the offerings makes them challenging to find.
