The cost of drug development is greater than 1 billion USD (DiMassi, 2003).
If we break down into two components
i.e Preclinical & Clinical( Phase 1, 2, 3)
the percentage is 40: 60
That is 400 million for pre-clinical drug development and 600 million for clinical.
Only way to reduce significantly the cost of drug development is by reducing clinical trial cost.
All the drug developers should focus on disruptive technologies which can replace current clinical trial methods
and see right timely approach. With few patients we can prove significantly as per statistics the efficacy of drug development. History shows that. all the major vaccines are developed by trying on few patients. Similarly , most of the break through antibiotics.
It is very clear that some thing we had missed!
Why only few companies can discover new drugs?
Which hinders the development of useful drugs? Is it cost or knowledge?
